Altree graduated from the “late great” Mt. Angel College, in Mt. Angel, Oregon, in 1970, where she studied under prominent Northwest artists Jon Masterson, Lee Kelley, Jim Shull, and Bruce West. Her first exhibition was at Marylhurst College in 1969. An interim period of twenty years was spent in the real world during which she continued to stir the creative juices and hold sacred the need for self-expression. She began to use gouache for the bright color effects, which was appropriate for the style that was developing during the latter part of 1991. Later she switched back to acrylics for technical reasons. The result has been a growing collection of work that reflects a letting go of many preconceived ideals and unyielding expectations, allowing feelings, dreams, and pleasurable images to come alive in colorful sometimes whimsical patterns. She says, “Life supplies me with an endless cache of ideas, which I have only to add a twist of humor and some color play.”
